The latest season of Formula E kicked off earlier today with the first race taking place in the streets of Hong Kong. British driver Sam Bird was victorious in the season’s opening race despite receiving a penalty for overshooting his pit box while trying to swap cars mid-race.

The beginning of the race was action-packed but quickly came to a halt after Andre Lotterer crashed into a wall creating a traffic jam of cars behind. The result of the crash was a red flag and the intervention of a safety car to get things back in order.

Overall, the race was extremely competitive and featured head-to-head battles, crashes and plenty of drama. However, one of the highlights was definitely Sam Bird overtaking Jean-Eric Vergne to take first place. Although he was unable to reclaim the top spot Vergne still managed to secure a second place podium finish with Nick Heidfeld right behind in third.

Elsewhere, last season’s standout drivers Lucas Di Grassi and Sebastien Buemi failed to impress, finishing outside of the top ten. Although, they will have an opportunity to turn things around tomorrow in race two which has the potential to be just as exciting as today.

Today was a good day for the DS Virgin team who had two of their drivers finish within the top ten. They will carry a lot of confidence in tomorrow’s race and will no doubt look to do even better. Sam Bird used the word “stressful” to describe today’s race and you can see why, but hopefully, his victory will help to ease some of that stress ahead of race two.
