Infiniti has unveiled a retro concept car called Prototype 9.
The car was officially revealed at the 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. This beautiful vehicle is a representation of the type of 1940’s Grand Prix race car Infiniti would have produced if they were around at that time.
Although the car has old school styling, under the hood you will find a next generation electric vehicle (EV) powertrain. To be specific, a 30 kWh high-voltage battery paired with a prototype electric motor.
The motor produces 148hp and 320 Nm of torque via a single-speed transmission. This power allows the Prototype 9 to hit a top speed of 105.6 mph and goes from 0-62 mph in 5.5 seconds.
The Prototype 9 is heavily inspired by aeronautical design and Japanese motorsport. The bodywork is made from steel body panels wrapped around a steel ladder frame. In true 1940’s Grand Prix style the car has an open-wheeled layout and an exposed cockpit giving it a very classic look.
“The beautiful execution of Prototype 9 represents a combination of artistry, craftsmanship and commitment to a romantic notion of our heritage. It inspired our people to work on Prototype 9 in their own time – as they were completely invested in the project and the details and features originated with them. Prototype 9 has been a labour of love for many of us.” – Alfonso Albaisa, Senior Vice President, Global Design at Nissan Motor Corporation.
This car clearly means a lot to everyone at Infiniti and the Nissan Motor Corporation. It’s a great opportunity for us all to witness and enjoy some amazing automotive craftsmanship and engineering.
